Cold wax medium, or CWM, is an oil painting medium. It is composed mainly of beeswax, with a small amount of solvent to soften it and other ingredients to aid in drying time. It has a soft, paste-like consistency at room temperature and dries to a matte surface. Unlike encaustic processes, it requires no heat to use it. Many luminous and unique effects are possible using CWM.

You can think of this as a space between oil painting and encaustic. Carla will guide you through the technical uses of the material, while leaving plenty of room for play and experimentation

About the instructor: Carla Appel is an IT professional by day but an artist at heart at all times. An art class junkie, she started taking classes over a decade ago for anything and everything and has lately been obsessed with cold wax medium. She would love to share this fun and very forgiving art form, full of textures and colors, with everyone willing. She was in her first art show this year, and her dream is to go back to school for an art degree one day.

About our classroom space: Ulna studio is a creative space located on the 2nd floor of the Portland Storage Building on SE Morrison st. There is not always elevator access for arrival/departure to your in-person class. Students always have the option of coming and leaving via a staircase.
