This exploratory workshop series invites you to indulge in the transformative magic of cyanotype! This alternative photo process is welcoming to all, whether you consider yourself an artist or not. A friendly photo-adjacent medium with no darkroom needed, it uses chemistry, ultraviolet light, and water to create stunning blue and white works of art. Rachel has been cultivating her artistic skills within this playful medium for six years and counting, and is excited to share the chaotic delight cyanotype has to offer!
Rachel’s teaching style and the welcoming nature of cyanotype itself offers spaciousness to explore your own unique creativity within a softly structured container of exercises and technique. The first session will begin with creating photograms, allowing you to discover and get the hang of this process. Each subsequent session will introduce further possibilities, such as coating your own materials with cyanotype chemistry, double-exposure, working with multiple layers of cyanotype, bleaching, toning, and more!
Materials Note: Rachel will provide access to bulk cyanotype chemistry during workshop hours, some pre-treated paper, and a discount code if attendees wish to purchase their own chemistry to apply at home between sessions. Attendees should purchase a pad of 30 sheets of 9x12 inch (or smaller) Canson XL watercolor paper, which is guaranteed to work well with this chemistry. You will be welcome to experiment with other paper/fabric and chemistry at your own risk. We will be using a limited quantity of UV lamps indoors, so being mindful of scale/breadth of projects will be important to ensure that everyone's creations are accommodated.
About the instructor: Rachel Mulder lives in Portland, Oregon, with her two cats, Opal and Tomasina. She was born in rural Wisconsin and when she was small she spent a lot of time sitting in the grass staring, obsessing about animals, watching cartoons and peeling her skin off. Now she makes drawings using a variety of media that often yield printmakerly textures – residual effects from earning her BFA in Printmaking at Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design in 2007. Encouraging others (and herself) to create/exist sincerely is a parallel passion of hers that braids itself into her visual work. https://rchlmldr.com/

About our classroom space: Ulna studio is a creative space located on the 2nd floor of the Portland Storage Building on SE Morrison st. There is not always elevator access for arrival/departure to your in-person class. Students always have the option of coming and leaving via a staircase.
