Have you been curious about oil painting, but felt too intimidated or just don’t know where to start? This hands-on class, which will take place over two sessions, will cover everything you need to know to paint confidently in oils.
We’ll go over the special qualities of oil paint, the essential tools used, and fundamental principles for how they are applied. We will also cover best practices for working safely with oils, as well as cleaning and disposing of used materials responsibly. Students will be guided through a traditional oil painting process while painting a still-life that will showcase oil’s unique strengths.
All materials will be provided, so you just need to show up!

About the instructor: Sandra Lanz Sánchez-Penichet (b. 1987) is a contemporary Cuban-American painter best known for her colorful head-and-shoulders portraits. Specializing in oil on panel, her work is characterized by robust palettes, energetic brushstrokes, and sketch-like linework. She has been painting portraits for more than 20 years and often paints live sitters from her home studio in 2-hour sittings. SandraLanzSP.com
About our classroom space: Ulna Studio is a creative space located on the 2nd floor of the Portland Storage Building on SE Morrison St. Students have to be comfortable walking up and down one flight of stairs. Masks will be optional, and we ask that you do not come to class if you are feeling sick.
