Over four sessions, participants will move from first-time folders to confident self-publishers with a finished zine, a community of fellow makers, and the tools to keep going on their own.
Session 1: What Is a Zine? History, formats, plus your first zine.
Session 2: Content & Voice Finding your subject and developing pages. You’ll start making a longer format zine by starting with writing exercises and visual brainstorming.
Session 3: Design & Production Practice some design principles that make zines readable and striking, plus hands-on techniques accessible to everyone.
Session 4: Publish & Distribute Editioning, zine swaps, and sustaining a practice.
What you'll learn overall: Three zine formats, binding methods, writing and image-making for the page, layout and design principles, reproduction and printing techniques, and where to find zine community beyond the classroom.
About the instructor: Fry (she/they) is a graphic recorder, illustrator, and educator who believes images are a powerful tool for creating positive change. Fry’s work as an artist extends into the culture of zine making. She has received two grants from the Regional Arts and Culture Council to produce publications focused on mental health awareness. She is also passionate about public art and can be found at parks sitting inside her creation Selfie Bot. An art installation offered to inspire joy and bring together strangers.
